Nothing is more interesting...just nothing !!

Five days ago, I'd just received an e-mail, actually one of many that I just ignore or delete for being concerned with adds, festivals or concerts; things that seem not to interest me at all in such crowded days of the year. However, I just interacted with the advertisement this time and started to know more.

What FamLab is ?

A competition that originated in Britain 7 years ago, for science students, professors or researchers to show how much talent they have in presenting scientific issues in an interesting way. A presentation shouldn't last for more than 3 min. with no Powerpoint, no figures or charts. Evaluation is upon Clarity, Charisma and Content. 7 years ago, FameLab was a purely British contest. Today, thanks to the British Council, it's an international one.

FameLab Egypt !!

Having been started in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Italy and others. It's the first year for FameLab to be established in China as well as Egypt. The British council in cooperation RDI organization decided to have 3 rounds; Cairo, Assiut and Alex.

Yesterday was the first round in Cairo, as they're planning to have another one. Yesterday, 3 competitors were chosen at Al Sawy Culture Wheel. Another 3 will be chosen on 21.12. Then 4-5 could be chosen from Assiut and Alex. Finally, on the 26.01.2010, Egypt will choose it's representative in the international competition taking place in June in Cheltenham, GB.

OOOKAI....

Actually,
Yesterday, I was one of those 3 winners chosen to compete for FameLab Egypt final next month.

I gave 2 presentations; one was about "Was it really the iceberg that made the Titanic disaster?". This one was appreciated enough by the judges to put me in the Cairo Final, for best 10 contestants, on the same day. It was mainly concerned with the metallurgic reason behind Titanic's failure. My second presentation on that final was about "Our future energy tree?". This one was about a project known as nanoleaves done by researchers of Biomimicry. Then, the final result was announced. Mohamed El Sawy, founder of El Sakia, was among the judges as well as the director Sandra Nashaat, TV presenter Ibrahim El Kerdany, the RDI* director and the head of scientific journalists' association.

Things need to be discussed, like how did 30% out of yesterday's competitors couldn't figure out what the aim of the competition was before they registered for it?? Is that really how associate professors, TA's and academics THINK in our universities!!

I hope U don't consider me snobbish! But it was really surprising for me to find many of the Egyptian so called "scientists" showing their understanding of a "presentation" in such a way. Time is not convenient I believe for discussing that. After all, winners were of high talent and showed the required skills :)

It's now a dream of mine...what about winning Egypt's final ?

Well..I'm just HAPPY :)
